Interior Design: Decorating with Pillows

Using Different Colors, Sizes, and Patterns

Every good designer knows that when it comes to adding the finishing touches to a sofa or a bed, decorating with pillows are a definite must!  They can help to bring together the complete look of a space, add beauty while being functional at the same time.   Also when it is time for a redesign in a space, changing pillows are one of the least expensive way to offer a new look.

Learning how to decorate with pillows does not require a rocket scientist degree…probably a little mathematical talent, but overall just knowing how to mix and match patterns, sizes and colors.

Color:  You want to make sure to have at least one pillow in the same or close to the color of the sofa or bed linens.  Also make sure to have complimentary colors as well.

Sizes:  In this case, size does matter…you want small, medium and large and also different shapes…squares, oblongs, and circles if available.

Patterns:  Patterns help to keep the sofa or bed interesting and less boring.  Mixing and matching patterns can be easy for some while at the same time be a nightmare for others.  Be sure that at least one color is consistent in each pattern.   Just as you would for different sizes of pillows, you should also have different sizes of patterns…small, medium and large.  *Hint*  for the amateurs, start off working with two patterns and for the pro’s, you can start off with three or if you are feeling really talented, then work with five patterns…good luck though!

For those not really wanting to make such a huge statement with decorating with pillows, pillow repeating (my own coined term) is one way to decorate with pillows that requires no special design ability or talent.  Just choose three or five (always decorate in odd numbers if possible) of the same pillows to add to your sofa or bed.  In my opinion, the repeat of the same pillow makes a statement of its own.

Just by using the same pillow creates a very sophisticated and clean look on this sofa.  And the above mirror adds to the uniqueness of this space.

My favorite way of decorating with pillows is to appeal to the sense of touch…tactile decorating.   I love to touch beautiful and interesting objects and decorating with pillows with different textures can add excitement to your sofa or bed.

The lambs hair pillow provides the softness while the textured leather pillows provide the roughness. A great juxtaposition of tactile sensation for your sofa.
